They may be on opposite sides of the aisle, but United States Senator John Thune does agree with some aspects of the President Obama’s gun violence package.
Thune supports more background checks and improvements to the way they're carried out, but he doesn't think banning military-style assault weapons will make the country safer.
"If I thought that was going to solve the problem, then I'd be inclined to be at least open to talking about it, but I just don't see why this discussion and debate always focuses on the firearms when it's not the firearms, it's the people who are behind them that are the real issue here,” Thune said.
