Thune, Noem Push EPA To Change Stove Requirements

April 3, 2014, 10:28 AM

WASHINGTON -

Wood-burning stoves have ignited a debate between the Obama administration and South Dakota lawmakers who oppose new regulations that would require more efficiency from an iconic feature of many rural homes.

The dispute has crackled since January. That's when the Environmental Protection Agency proposed rule changes that increase emissions requirements on new wood-powered heaters. Many are pressing the EPA to reconsider as a comment period comes to an end.

South Dakota Sen. John Thune and Rep. Kristi Noem oppose the rules. The Republicans argue that any new requirements will have a disproportionate impact on South Dakotans, particularly rural residents. About one in four South Dakota homes has a fireplace or wood stove.

The new rules would not affect existing wood-fired stoves and heaters.
