Three Escape Beadle County Detention Center

November 22, 2004, 5:58 PM by Scott Thorson

Three Escape Beadle County Detention Center

Beadle County officials are looking into policy changes after three girls broke out of a Beadle County Detention Center this weekend. The sheriff says the girls locked two jailors in a cell and escaped. Officials later caught them more than 100 miles south of Huron in Lake Andes.

It all started in the day room at the Beadle County Juvenile Detention Center. Three girls watched as two guards searched another girls room for contraband.

Berman said, "The guards were in doing a cell check, they pushed the guards into the room, slammed the door and went out the west, they knew how to open the door to get out the west end of the building."

After locking the jailors in a cell, the three girls then escaped through the door, fled to another part of Huron where they stole a car. That's when they headed to Lake Andes.

Berman said, "They were later caught down in Lake Andes, they have been transported back to Huron, one was 15, two were 16, Native American."

The sheriff believes the girls set up the jailors in a similar incident just days before.

Berman said, "I think part of it was planned after the first time looking for the contraband that supposedly one other female in the cell had and I think they put it together again and thought it might work, and it did."

Now the girls are back in the detention center, and could face more charges.

Berman said, "Nobody got hurt, which is always a possibility in these kinds of things."

This is the second major jail break from the Beadle County Jail. Last year, Jason Heasley escaped and led law enforcement on a month-long manhunt. They eventually caught him in Sioux Falls.
