A family of four is dead after the truck they were driving in lost control on Interstate 90 just west of Sioux Falls on Saturday.
Sergeant Steve Swensen with the Highway Patrol confirms a mother, father, a 16-year-old and a 12-year-old died from injuries they received in the crash.
It happened around 5:15 p.m. Saturday.
Swensen says the truck the family was driving in was headed east when it left the roadway, struck a cable guardrail and slid into the median. There it hit an embankment and vaulted before coming to rest.
Law enforcement detoured westbound traffic as two medical helicopters landed on I-90 to take the victims to nearby hospitals.
At this point, it's unknown what caused the truck to leave the road. Everyone in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt.
Authorities aren’t releasing any names at this time.
The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating.
