It’s a busy time of year because thousands of people are flying into South Dakota for pheasant hunting season.
South Dakota has been coined the pheasant hunting capital of the world. Because of that reputation, the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau decided they wanted to do something to welcome the hunters. So each year they set up booths with cookies, coffee and lemonade at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport. The CVB says they really roll out the red carpet for these hunters.
“We really need to step out in front and say thank you for flying into Sioux Falls because they could fly into other places. We just do it because we want to say thank you and of course welcome them to the state,” Teri Schmidt with the Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau said.
Schmidt says this is like a reunion for many people from all over the world because they come to South Dakota year after year to hunt. But, it is more than hunting birds and meeting old friends, hunters who come here spend money and that is a good thing for the Rushmore state.
“They rent cars. They rent other vehicles. They buy merchandise at stores. They buy dog food and of course hunting licenses and shells. It's a great economic boom for stores of all kinds throughout the community,” Schmidt said.
The Sioux Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau will be at the airport Thursday afternoon and Friday.
Pheasant hunting season starts on Saturday at noon.
