The scene at The Outdoor Campus is calm now, but rewind more than six months ago and it was a different story.
Over Labor Day weekend 2013, a storm pushed through southwestern Sioux Falls. Straight-lined winds are to blame for the damage done to The Outdoor Campus.
"We had some damage in the storm toward the end of last year," Thea Miller Ryan, Outdoor Campus Director, said.
Trees were knocked over and signs were split into pieces and the very popular nature playscape also saw plenty of damage.
"We've been busy getting our nature playscape all fixed up," Miller Ryan said.
Now, The Outdoor Campus is rebuilding.
"[We’re] replacing some of the benches around here. It's going to be great," Miller Ryan said. "We will be planting trees and we'll be putting up a new tunnel for kids to crawl through."
Miller Ryan wants to get the playscape back to par before kids are scattered throughout the area for the spring and summer classes.
"This summer, we'll have a ton of different classes for kids ages three and up. We do family classes. We do classes just for women, just for adults; pretty much anything you can do outdoors we're going to be teaching this summer," Miller Ryan said.
Miller Ryan says they have been working hard to get the place back to normal, but it still has a long way to go.
Even though they are still cleaning and rebuilding, the park is still open. The Outdoor Campus is open weekdays until 5 p.m. and the trails are open until 10 p.m. every night.
