The Man Behind The Money

February 17, 2014, 7:15 AM by Angela Kennecke

The Man Behind The Money

He's been named one of the most generous givers in the country. T. Denny Sanford is a household name around here, but not many people know much about the story behind this self-made man.

First Premier Bank and Premier Bankcard founder T. Denny Sanford is maybe best known for his philanthropy.  He's given away a billion dollars to date, much of that going to South Dakota, for the Sanford Health system, Homestake Mine, Crazy Horse Memorial and others.

Angela Kennecke: You had millions when you were 45.  Did you ever think you'd be a billionaire?
T. Denny Sanford: No. I really am not a billionaire, other than the value of the business today.  But it's all going to be given away.

Angela Kennecke was in San Diego at Sanford's beach house to learn more about the man, why he's given so much money away and what he's going to do in the future. Watch for this story Monday night on Eye on KELOLAND at 10 p.m.
