The Heat Is Around The Corner

While we've had sunshine in KELOLAND for the past several days, the temperatures have remained below average with highs in the 60s and 70s. In fact, Sioux Falls has had below average highs since Saturday, by an average of seven degrees. That will soon swing the other way.

The heat will build to our southwest over the next couple of days. As the upper air pattern creates a ridge, that heat will move into the central and northern plains. Expect many locations in the 80s and 90s. 100 degree heat will also be possible for Pierre on Tuesday.

Reaching one hundred is not out of the ordinary for Pierre. Over the past twelve years, Pierre averages four days with one hundred degree heat in July. It happened 12-times in 2005. That heat wave included a high of 117 on July 15.  The average high for the month that year was 97. That's seven degrees above the climate average.

So far this year, July is about eight degrees cooler than average.
