Texting While Driving Ban On Council's Docket

September 4, 2012, 6:33 PM by Kelly Bartnick

Texting While Driving Ban On Council's Docket
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

There may be wording changes in the proposed texting and driving ordinance the Sioux Falls City Council is voting on Tuesday night. Council members Sue Aguilar and Michelle Erpenbach will introduce an amendment to the distracted driving ordinance that would exclude GPS units from the list of banned devices.

The ban up for a city council vote Tuesday night would take electronic communication devices out of the mix. It's the city council's plan to regulate your cell phone use while driving -- particularly when it comes to text messages on any device that can send or receive messages.

The ban still has a long list of communication devices you cannot use to send an electronic text message while driving, including PDA's BlackBerry devices, smart phones, email, mp3 players, laptops, push-to-talk cell phones and more.

But the amendment being put on the table would take your GPS navigation device off the list of items you could get a ticket for using.

The statute would also make exceptions. You can still use your phone to make a call, and a hands-free system where data is exchanged without direct initiation by a person would also be okay according to the proposal. Also, emergency responders on official business would be exempt from the proposed ordinance.

The meeting is set for 7 p.m. Tuesday at Carnegie Town Hall.
