Terry Peak Ready For Scaled-Back Opening

November 30, 2012, 6:00 PM by Derek Olson

Terry Peak Ready For Scaled-Back Opening
LEAD, SD -

In spite of forecasted temperatures into the mid-60s, Terry Peak is opening up for business this weekend. Even though the open will be limited to one run, the ski resort is looking forward to the start of the winter sports season.

While most people have been basking in the late-fall heat, the warm weather has made for tough conditions at Terry Peak.

"It's been a hard start for us this year, so far. We haven't had cold temperatures, which limit the amount of snow we can make, and then the natural snow just hasn't been here yet," Terry Peak's general manager Tom Marsing said.

Terry Peak began making artificial snow on November 1. But with so many warm days this month, it's been hard keeping it on the ground.

"We made snow two nights ago and actually during the day also. Now, we're going to be pushing 50 today and maybe even into the 60s by the weekend. So, until the temperatures get down close to that 30 degrees we're kind of stuck. We're not doing anything," Marsing said.

But thanks to some strategic snow-making, the ski resort has outwitted Mother Nature and is opening one run this weekend.

"You know, with what we have open it's going to be great skiing.  We're going to have the Stewart, little beginner hill open with one lift and our little carpet," Marsing said.

Until colder weather returns and brings more snow, the ski resort will only be open on the weekends. But even with the scaled-back opening, Marsing says he's expecting hundreds of people to turn out.

"We've had all of the summer sports, now it's time for the winter so we hope everybody comes out.  It'll be a good time, we guarantee that," Marsing said.

Once more snow opens the runs at the top of the mountain, Terry Peak will begin their regular season schedule.
