The American Red Cross has several different life-saving apps you can download. They even have an app to train you to become a volunteer.
Red Cross officials say this summer they published the Team Red Cross App; an app that allows you to be briefed on disaster assignments, watch tutorials or even take quizzes about what to do when you volunteer.
Sioux Empire Red Cross Community Chapter Executive Tony Burke says the time to download the app is right now.
"Everyone wants to help out and this is one way you can help. This is about preparedness for the next disaster, not necessarily what we're dealing with in Colorado," Burke said.
Already there are teams of experienced volunteers from KELOLAND that are on their way to Colorado to lend a helping hand after the massive flooding. Burke says they aren't sending volunteers to Colorado who signed up on the Team Red Cross App, but that could soon change. Burke says when the water subsides, the Red Cross may put out a call for volunteers.
Other apps the Red Cross has, like the Tornado App, Hurricane App, First Aid App and Shelter Finding App, have recently saved lives here in KELOLAND.
"The Tornado App, for example, just back in June 21st on Lake Poinsett, a gentleman had it on his phone, a siren went off, he alerted some elderly folks that lived around the lake and they testament to him that he saved their lives because that Tornado App went off in the time before the tornado hit," Burke said.
