Taking In The Christmas Views From Above

December 12, 2013, 6:04 PM by Sammi Bjelland

Taking In The Christmas Views From Above
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Driving around to look at the Christmas lights is one thing, but seeing them from the air is a whole new experience. A local winery is taking guests above the city streets, for a bird's eye view this holiday season with, Twilight Flights.

This time of year the roads can be tricky. But when you're high above the ground, all you have to worry about is the view.

"It was absolutely incredible. I had no idea it would be that beautiful from the air," said flight guest, Thea Miller Ryan.

Strawbale Winery is in its 6th year of hosting Twilight Flights. Owner Don South said it seemed like a no-brainer once he met a man with an available helicopter.

"Got a chance to visit with him and said, what are you guys doing in the winter time? He said there's not much going on. So I said, well sleigh rides have been done. And stuff like that, so let's add helicopters," South said.

Before take-off, guests get hors devours and wine. After landing, they get desserts. Though the wine is for adults, the flights are for any age and occasion.

"We'll get a grandchild, a parent, a grandparent on a flight. We get 60th wedding anniversary flights. We get 90-year-old people going on the flights. We always have a few engagement flights," South said.

Some of the landmarks here on the ground, also offer a magical view from above.

"We flew over the cathedral and seeing it from a different angle. I grew up by there, going to my grandparents' and going to church there. And I can't even tell you how neat it was to see it from above," Ryan said.

"To see the trees and the homes and the businesses and everything from up in the air, it was just wonderful. Falls Park is just marvelous," Colleen Wangsness said.

And if you have a fear nausea, first timer Colleen Wangsness says it's nothing but smooth sailing in the air.

"I had no idea what to expect. And so I even took some Dramamine tonight because I was so scared. But it turned out to be just an absolute blast. From the time we took until we landed," said Wangsness.

Twilight Flights are $220 for two people and $255 for 3. Flights are available this weekend and next.

You can call 605-543-5071 for reservations.
