Syphilis, HIV, Chlamydia Rates Up In South Dakota

May 14, 2014, 5:01 AM

PIERRE, SD -

Figures through April 2014 indicate that rates of some sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise in South Dakota.

State Epidemiologist Lon Kightlinger says syphilis rates haven't been this high since the 1970s. He adds that HIV rates are reaching levels not seen since the 1980s.

There are 43 cases of syphilis in the state so far this year. Kightlinger says most of the past infections came from out of state, but now it's "homegrown syphilis."

Medical professionals will meet Wednesday to discuss the rise of syphilis in the state.

South Dakota typically has high rates of chlamydia. Rates are up this year. About 168 of every 100,000 South Dakotans have chlamydia.
