Suspect Wounded In Officer-Involved Shooting

Suspect Wounded In Officer-Involved Shooting
RAPID CITY, SD - Officials and the suspect of a pursuit in Rapid City exchanged gunfire Tuesday morning on an Interstate 90 ramp, wounding the suspect.

A Rapid City Police officer had stopped 41-year-old James Leslie Baker Junior of Wyoming around 1:20 a.m. in Rapid City when Baker left the scene in his vehicle. The pursuit for the suspect took officials through town and onto Interstate 90 westbound.

Police used road spikes near Highway 44 and Cambell Street, which deflated one of Baker's tires and led him to stop on the LaCross Street off-ramp.

That's where officials say Baker got out of the vehicle with a handgun and fired at them. Two police officers, Senior Officer Sean Doyle and Officer Michael Frybarger, and South Dakota Highway Patrol Trooper Robert Rybak returned fire and hit Baker several times.

He was taken to Rapid City Regional Hospital for treatment and is in serious condition.

The South Dakota Attorney General's Office is now investigating.

Officials plan to release more details on the incident during a news conference scheduled for 9:00 a.m. local time.
