Suspect Shot Following Chase

October 17, 2012, 5:00 PM by Peggy Moyer

Suspect Shot Following Chase
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A South Dakota Highway Patrol trooper is in critical condition on Wednesday after trying to stop a car for erratic driving in Sioux Falls.

Trooper Andrew Steen tried to stop a vehicle around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday in western Sioux Falls.  When the driver wouldn't stop, a chase pursued.

While police are not releasing too many details, we do know the situation escalated and the trooper was struck by the suspect's car and the suspect was hit by law enforcement's gunfire.

Steen was rushed to the hospital after being run over in the parking lot of the Bridges strip mall near 57th and Western Avenue.

Authorities say it looks like the suspect, a 25-year-old woman, struck the trooper with the front of her car.

In response, law enforcement opened fire on the suspect's car to try to stop her. Lincoln County sheriff's deputies had been called for back up; however, Highway Patrol Captain Kevin Joffer says details on who fired weapons aren't being released.

"I can't share anymore. This is an ongoing investigation. We're trying to put all the pieces together and I don't want to jeopardize that investigation," Joffer said.

Joffer did confirm the suspect was shot, but she still managed to drive several blocks to 47th and Western Avenue. That's where police eventually arrested her.

"She is a suspect at this time. There have been no charges filed at this time. This is under investigation," Joffer said.

Moyer: Were there shots fired anywhere other than the first intersection?
Joffer: I can't confirm or deny any of that. I just know she was apprehended around 47th and Western.

Joffer says because the incident involves use of force, another agency is taking the lead in the investigation. The South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation is in charge and being assisted by the Sioux Falls Police Department.
