Susan G. Komen Race Kicks Off This Weekend

September 28, 2012, 7:49 AM by Austin Hoffman

Susan G. Komen Race Kicks Off This Weekend
SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It's a race that's been changing lives for around 30 years.  And this year, one of them will be held at Falls Park in Sioux Falls.

It’s a global event that started when Nancy Brinker promised her dying sister, Susan G. Komen, that she would do whatever it took to find a cure for breast cancer.

Thirty years later, the event is stronger than ever.

"It's simple; the mission of Susan G. Komen is to have a world without breast cancer," Race Chair Susie Patrick said.

The South Dakota Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was started by a group of women from Vermillion. And while it’s been held there for the past four years, it will now call Sioux Falls home.

"It became very evident at the race last year that we needed to bring the race to a bigger population base. The mission behind Komen is fundraising, it’s to raise those funds to find a cure for breast cancer," Patrick said.

Patrick is excited to see the race in Sioux Falls. She says most of the money raised in South Dakota stays here.

"Seventy-five percent of those funds stay here in our state and benefit under insured and uninsured men and women who are battling breast cancer. It's for screening, education, mammography, treatment, and then 25 percent of the funds go into the national research sort of pot is what I call it," Patrick said.

In fact, the South Dakota affiliate has already received more than $1 million grant from the national organization.

"We are saving lives and that is what is so exciting about it," Patrick said.

The 5k run kicks off at 9 a.m. Sunday at Falls Park.  The mile run/walk starts at 9:30 a.m.
