Summer Space Scramble At SF Humane Society

SIOUX FALLS, SD -
Warmer temperatures usually attract more stray animals in Sioux Falls. And with the news one shelter is no longer accepting animals, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society is scrambling to find more space.
Much like humans, animals tend to stray in the summer. It could be a pet or a pack of wild, ravenous, yet cute raccoons. More of these critters are winding up at the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society.
"I think we'll be upwards of over 100 animals within the next couple of weeks," Executive Director Kori Baade said.
The main building at the Humane Society was built to house about 280 animals, or almost 100 fewer than are living there now. But no matter how busy this facility gets this summer, none of these guys will be put down to free-up more space.
"That's probably going to be the biggest challenge that we'll have is to find enough foster families and finding enough space for the animals that we have coming in," Baade said.
Employees are doing what they can to help.
"Each one of our staff has an animal in their office right now so they're getting well socialized," Baade said.
Such as Pebbles, a pit-bull puppy who's ready to become a forever friend, as so many others are waiting to do the same.
"We've always said that there is room for two shelters in Sioux Falls because the problem not getting better," Baade said.
Adding to the space crunch at the shelter, the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society also takes in animals picked up by Animal Control under a contract with the city.
