Summer Activities Fair Has Kids Looking Ahead
SIOUX FALLS, SD - Despite the recent string of above-zero temperatures, we still have more than three months until summer starts.  But that didn't stop local parents and kids from getting a head start on planning for warmer days. 

Sioux Falls Parks and Recreation held its annual Summer Activities Fair Sunday afternoon at the Sioux Falls Convention Center. And simply thinking about the summer was enough to get both parents and kids excited for the opportunities ahead.

"It's nice to think ahead to warmer weather, sunshine, and just some longer days outside," Sioux Falls parent Julie Kolling said.

With dozens of summer activities to choose from - swimming, baseball, soccer, and more - parents and kids are longing for nicer days.

"Normally now, there's still snow on the ground, but it's been feeling like a longer winter every day," Sioux Falls parent Gerrad Nelson said.  "So, I'll be happy when spring actually gets here."

Parents are using the activities fair to schedule for summer and make sure kids enjoy every minute of it.

"Sometimes, summers are almost more busy than the school year, trying to fit everything in," Kolling said.  "So, this way, we can prioritize and make sure to get in those things the kids really want to do."

Parents say the best part about the Summer Activities Fair is having a variety of options to choose from in just one place.

"This is great," Nelson said.  "It gives me a good idea of what all is out there. Some of these I didn't even know were out there, so it definitely broadens my perspective."

"It saves me time instead of even going online and looking up a whole bunch of different websites and trying to piece all that together," Kolling said.

And while summer is still several months away, parents say the activities fair reminds them that winter will soon be over.

"It seems ridiculous to complain about the weather when we live in South Dakota," Kolling said.  "But I am definitely the complaining part and we're looking forward to some sun."
