New research names South Dakota the 8th most corrupt state. The study -- by the University of Hong Kong and Indiana University -- looked at violations of federal corruption laws dating back to 1976. It also looked at spending.
According to the report, states with higher levels of corruption were more likely to spend money on construction, corrections and police protection at the expense of education and hospitals.
Mississippi is at the top of the list, followed by Louisiana, Tennessee and Illinois.
This isn't the first report of its kind. In January, Business Insider ranked South Dakota as the third most corrupt state.
