Strong Winds Destroy Centerville Ag Building

June 11, 2010, 5:51 PM by Ben Dunsmoor

Strong Winds Destroy Centerville Ag Building
CENTERVILLE, SD - The wicked weather whipped through Centerville and wiped out storage sheds at an ag supply dealer. The damage was caused by 60 to 70 mile per hour winds, but the business looks like a twister tore through it.

A late spring storm added to the workload at Centerville Ag, making a mess of the of the yard, and ripping through a storage shed.

"We're a farm service dealer and we've got a lot of spraying to do yet, and getting her rebuilt too I guess," Brad Trudeau with Centerville Ag said while he looked at his destroyed shed.

Workers spent the day sifting through piles of boards and trusses tossed around like toothpicks during the severe weather that took out a large shed that stored seeds, equipment and fertilizer.

"They say straight line winds but it might have been a tornado the way it looks to me that hit our buildings here last night," Trudeau said.

Tornado or not, the damage is severe. Not only did it tear up the shed but it also spilled nearly one thousand gallons of fertilizer. The owner of Centerville Ag says it may look bad but they were able to contain the spill.

"It can always be worse. The state regulations have us do diking in our containment areas and anything that was spilled was in that area," Trudeau said.

A spill that may have been contained among the mess, but destruction that will take days to clean up.

The owner of Centerville Ag hopes to have everything cleaned up so the business can open by Monday. During the clean up the seeds, chemical and fertilizer will be moved to locations in Vermillion and Elk Point.
