We have a very cold start to 2014 in KELOLAND with many areas east of the James Valley under a wind chill advisory until noon. Look for areas of light snow and flurries today, but highs will stay below zero in Aberdeen and Sioux Falls will be near zero much of the afternoon. Pierre and Rapid City will be a little warmer, but still colder than normal.
The weather looks very cold tonight, especially if we see less clouds in the northeast. Aberdeen may drop to -26, with a projected low at -17 in Sioux Falls. Winds will stay light tomorrow much of the day East River, but south winds will start to develop across the west during the afternoon as warmer air starts to return.
The headline on Friday will be stronger winds from the south. Areas of blowing snow are possible along the James Valley and points east, so be travelers should be aware of those conditions as winds increase during the morning over 25mph. The good news is it will be warmer. Highs on Friday will get to around freezing in both Aberdeen and Sioux Falls late in the day, with around 40 possible in Pierre, and lower 50s in Rapid City.
Enjoy the short window of warmth because big changes are coming early next week. The air mass moving in Sunday and Monday may be one of the coldest in a few years. The projected high on Monday is -10 in both Sioux Falls and Aberdeen. Wind chills could drop to -50 as NW winds increase 20-30 mph.
