Storm Center Update-Wednesday AM

January 16, 2013, 6:33 AM by Brian Karstens

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

It’s a warmer morning in much of KELOLAND with many spots in the 30s.  It’s also breezy and we have areas of light snow and flurries.  The amount of snow will be light, under a half inch at most.  However, there is a cold front in North Dakota that will drop temperatures in the northeast through the day.  Sioux Falls and Pierre will have highs in the upper 30s this afternoon, with Rapid City in the upper 40s.  Winds will be strongest today in Rapid City with gusts near 40mph from the northwest.

A few flurries will remain possible tonight with lows ranging from 8 in Aberdeen to 21 in Rapid City.  Tomorrow will be cooler in eastern KELOLAND with highs in the upper teens in the far northeast, but 40s are still likely in many areas West River.  We still expect a warmer trend on Friday with highs close to 40 again in Sioux Falls.  Rapid City could even top 50.

Changes are still in store for the weekend.  A cold front will arrive Saturday afternoon with strong winds and falling temperatures and perhaps some light snow.  Another burst of cold will arrive on Sunday, and this one will be bitterly cold.  Wind chills below -30 are possible Sunday night and Monday AM across eastern KELOLAND.  The high on Monday may stay below zero in areas north of Sioux Falls, which may be some of the coldest air around here since January 2010.

The good news is the cold air will start to retreat on Tuesday and temperatures will begin to rise through the middle of next week back to normal levels.
