Storm Center Update-Tuesday AM

January 8, 2013, 6:48 AM by Brian Karstens

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

We are starting the day with some patchy fog in southeastern SD, but this should be fairly limited to the morning.  Winds are increasing in western KELOLAND and high wind warnings have been issued for the far northwest including Faith and Buffalo.  Despite the increasing wind today, highs will be in the mid 40s in the west and mid 30s in the east.

Tonight’s weather looks clear and mild for this time of the year with lows in the upper teens to lower 20s.  This will set the stage for warmer weather tomorrow with highs climbing back into the lower 50s in Rapid City and Valentine.  Sioux Falls will be close to 40, so our thaw will continue.  The mild weather will carry over into Thursday as a storm system to our south moves toward southeastern KELOLAND.  It will be warm enough for mainly rain, but some freezing rain can’t be ruled out, especially Thursday evening.  After this system moves out of KELOLAND, another one will move in from the Rockies.  This system will produce a swath of light to moderate snowfall, mainly west of Sioux Falls starting Friday afternoon and continuing into Saturday AM.  Colder winds and some blowing snow may accompany this system, but we don’t see widespread heavy snow.  I would stay tuned to the forecast because snow and blowing snow could make roads hazardous in some areas.

Colder weather and subzero wind chills will be with us to start the weekend, so enjoy the warmer trend while it lasts.
