Storm Center Update-Thursday AM

January 2, 2013, 7:10 AM by Brian Karstens

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

Areas of light snow continue to track east across KELOLAND.  Most areas are seeing light snow accumulation under 1”, but much heavier snow is falling in the northern Black Hills.  A winter storm warning has been posted for the northern Black Hills including Lead and Deadwood where 10-16” of accumulation will be likely.  As northwest winds increase, areas of blowing snow will be common.  Winds will be strongest in western SD, with gusts over 40mph in Rapid City.  Temperatures will hold steady in the upper 20s much of the day.

Flurries will end tonight and colder air will filter south during the overnight, with temperatures dropping below zero in Aberdeen.  The wind will continue overnight in the higher elevations of northeast SD and western MN, so some blowing snow may occur.

Temperatures will stay chilly tomorrow in the east with highs in the mid teens.  Highs will return to the 30s in the west.

Warmer readings are ahead for the weekend with highs in the 30s east, with 40s in the west.  That warmer trend will continue into early next week with highs above freezing in many areas.
