Storm Center Update-Thursday AM

November 8, 2012, 6:18 AM by Brian Karstens

SIOUX FALLS, SD -

A cold front is on the move this morning across KELOLAND, but most areas will still be in the 50s this afternoon with partly cloudy skies.

Winds will be increasing from the east or northeast tonight as clouds increase across most areas.  There may be a few flurries or sprinkles in the north, mainly in northwestern SD.  Lows overnight will be in the 30s.

Cool east winds will be likely on Friday with highs remaining in the 50s in the southeast.  Highs will struggle to get into the lower 40s in the northwest, but precipitation looks limited on Friday in KELOLAND.  That starts changing Friday night and Saturday.

Our viewers in Mobridge, Timber Lake, and Buffalo will be in line for rain, freezing rain, sleet and snow on Saturday.  There are no advisories or watches yet, but that could change as we get more details on the storm.  Areas of mixed precip. will change to snow in Rapid City as well to start the weekend.  It still appears the brunt of the storm will be to our north, with blizzard warnings in effect for Montana.

The warm sector of the storm will affect Sioux Falls on Saturday with high jumping back into the 60s.  Rain showers may develop in the late afternoon, with more significant t-storms along an approaching cold front late in the day in portions of NW IA.  We’ll keep an eye on that the next couple of days.

There will be a very sharp drop in temperature Saturday night in eastern KELOLAND, so a period of drizzle or freezing drizzle will be possible.  Also, some post-frontal snow could develop as strong jet stream winds develop parallel to the front crossing into IA Saturday night.  This may end up being a 1-3” snow by Sunday morning across parts of eastern KELOLAND if the Canadian model is correct.  Obviously, there are many details associated with a storm like this, so stay tuned to the latest forecasts as we head toward the weekend.

One last note…it’s going to get cold behind the storm.  Some of you will see lows down to 10-15 above zero by Monday morning.  But don’t assume winter is here just yet, highs will climb back into the 50s in many areas by the middle of next week.
