Storm Center Update - Wednesday PM

March 20, 2013, 2:50 PM by Ben Cathey

It’s been a cold but sunny day across the east with better warmth out west.  For many, the first day of spring came and went with little change.  In Sioux Falls, it’s been the coldest first day of spring in almost 50 years!  Our normal high on March 20 is 45° and we’re about 20° colder than average East River.
Most will have a quiet night but there is a slim chance of moisture moving in from Wyoming.  The Black Hills could see a light wintry mix tonight but it’s a long-shot.
Clouds should move in tomorrow and we’ll have widespread mostly cloudy skies.  The next round of snow comes later tomorrow as an unusual storm track heads into the Missouri valley.  The storm heads in from Montana and will primarily be snow, both from the colder air and from the late-day timing.  Most computer models bring the best accumulation along and west of the Missouri.  The air will be slightly warmer in south-central South Dakota and areas Todd & Mellette Counties could see some frozen mix.
This storm system lingers in South Dakota through much of Friday.  It does look to fade by late day before making it very far into Minnesota.  Still, we’re carrying a 40% chance for many spots early Friday.
Snow should remain in place for the Black Hills Saturday before another low deepens out of the Rockies.  We’ll also see an intense cooling trend Sunday as this new system develops.  It looks like this Sunday moisture will be centered in Nebraska but could clip areas along and south of I-90.  The most noticeable feature next week will be cold temperatures.  Most long-range trends don’t let go of the cold for quite a while.
