Storm Center Update - Tuesday PM

January 7, 2014, 2:53 PM by Scot Mundt

Light snow showers and flurries will be possible in eastern South Dakota this afternoon.  Any snow that falls will stay less than a half inch.  Persistent snow will continue in southwest South Dakota this afternoon and evening.  There’s currently an area of light snow in the southern Hills from near Mount Rushmore to Hot Springs.  An inch or two of accumulation will be possible in this area as the snow falls through the evening and early night.  Lows will be in the single digits and teens below zero for central and eastern South Dakota while western KELOLAND will stay in the single digits above zero.

The cold air will remain across KELOLAND for Wednesday.  Highs will once again be in the single digits in eastern South Dakota with teens likely in central KELOLAND.  Western South Dakota will have a mostly cloudy sky with scattered light snow and highs near thirty.  Winds will remain light with speeds averaging five to ten miles per hour from the southeast.

The warmer air will start to move into eastern South Dakota on Thursday with highs in the teens and twenties.  Upper twenties are in the forecast for Pierre, while Rapid City will warm to near forty.

The weather will be dry and above average for Friday through Sunday.  Highs will be in the thirties and forties this weekend.  Fifties and low sixties are not out of the question for areas in south central and western South Dakota.
