Storm Center Update - Tuesday PM

December 3, 2013, 4:35 PM by Scot Mundt

Snow reports of six to ten inches have already been reported in west central to northwest South Dakota.  That is, from Stanley and Haakon Counties northwest to Perkins and Harding Counties.  These areas will see an end to the snow this evening,

There’s a pocket of snow in northeast South Dakota that will also move east through the evening.  Once this moves through, there will be mainly dry skies in northeast KELOLAND until late tonight and Wednesday morning.

Snow will continue to expand in south central South Dakota this evening and move east overnight.  The snow will spread into eastern South Dakota and Minnesota late tonight and Wednesday morning.  Snow will greet many people for the morning commute, and it will continue through much of the morning.

Total snow amounts will range from three to six inches in south central and eastern KELOLAND through Wednesday evening.  Parts of western and southwest Minnesota will have higher amounts; I wouldn’t be surprised if we get reports of six to ten inches there.  Northerly winds of fifteen to thirty miles per hour will be common across the area.  This will allow for blowing snow and reduced visibilities, use caution when spending time outdoors later tonight and Wednesday.

Once the snow leaves, the bitterly cold air will take hold.  Highs will only be in the single digits and teens on Thursday.  By Friday, afternoon highs may struggle above zero in northern South Dakota.  Depending on cloud cover, overnight lows will easily fall to the single digits and teens below.  If we completely clear and have light winds overnight, some of the overnights may fall to the twenties below in northern South Dakota.
