Storm Center Update - Thursday PM

February 7, 2013, 3:00 PM by Scot Mundt

Clouds will remain in central and eastern KELOLAND this evening and tonight with areas of fog.  Temperatures will remain steady or slowly fall with overnight lows falling to the teens and twenties in eastern KELOLAND.  Partly cloudy skies are forecast in western South Dakota this evening and tonight with lows falling to the lower and middle twenties.

Expect clouds in eastern KELOLAND Friday morning, and then they will slowly leave the area for the afternoon.  South winds of ten to twenty miles per hour will help scour out the clouds and warm the temperatures to the middle and upper thirties.  Central South Dakota will warm to the lower forties with numbers near fifty in the west.

As a storm system approaches from the southwest this weekend, mild air will nudge into southeast KELOLAND.  This will allow for rain in the southeast, from Yankton to Pipestone and east (including Sioux Falls).  To the north and west of this area, there will be a good chance for snow.  The models are throwing out at least a half to an inch of water, heavy snow will be possible Sunday afternoon and evening.  As of now, amounts over six inches will be possible in parts of south central to northeast South Dakota.  Along with the snow, winds will increase from the north causing reduced visibilities and travel problems.  Use caution and pay attention to the changing weather this weekend.

I also need to mention, the new run of the European model came in a little colder.  This means the snow chance can still move to the southeast.  Exact track is still uncertain.  After all, the storm system is just now coming on the Pacific shore.

Once the system leaves, colder temperatures will move into the upper plains.  We’ll have below average temps as we start the new work week.
