Storm Center Update - Thursday PM

A persistent system has been bringing light snows to the far northeast throughout the day.  Most others are dealing with frigid air and bitter wind chills, thanks to a strong south breeze.  There is a warm front just east of Rapid City that will allow many of us to slowly warm through the evening. 
Northwest winds arriving after midnight will help scour out the thick cirrus but it could take a while.  Eventually we will see some sunshine tomorrow morning.  After that it should be a fairly pleasant January day.  We’ll continue our trend of the best warmth being out west while the northeast struggles to crack the single digits.  It looks like winds atop Buffalo Ridge will be stronger, and it is the same story for the northeast prairie.  That won’t be helping out the wind chills through the afternoon.
Saturday should be pretty quiet with sunshine and a slight warming trend.  That warmth will continue into Sunday but expect more clouds.  By the end of Sunday we are tracking two systems moving in.  One is over Wyoming but we’ve kept the Rapid City forecast dry for now.  The second storm should be more compelling locally.  Most computer models keep the storm of here, closer to Omaha and Des Moines.  But one of the American computer models takes it into the far northeast by late Sunday and early Monday.  We will be right on the rain/snow/sleet line so it should be interesting as we get closer.
After that we are tracking a storm with more widespread chances for KELOLAND.  Many of us could see snow by Tuesday and there looks to be a heavier band with maybe a trowal forming.  Next Wednesday should be much colder.
