Storm Center Update - Thursday PM

October 11, 2012, 2:23 PM by Scot Mundt

Isolated sprinkles, light sleet, and light snow have been reported this afternoon.  There are a couple of thin bands of this in south central and east central KELOLAND.  These bands will continue to move east through the rest of the afternoon and evening.  In the meantime, clouds will slowly decrease through the late afternoon and evening eventually leading to partly cloudy skies for the overnight.  Lows will fall to the twenties in central and eastern KELOLAND to the thirties in the west.

A lot more sunshine is on tap for Friday, but winds will also increase throughout the day.  The south winds of twenty to thirty-five miles per hour will help temperatures warm to the sixties to near seventy degrees.  Along with the increase in temperatures, the moisture in the air will also increase.

The increase in moisture will eventually lead to our chance for rain Friday night into Saturday.  The best locations for the rain are still in southeast KELOLAND where a quarter to a third of an inch will be common from Yankton to Marshall and east.  Parts of northwest Iowa will have a chance for heavier amounts.  If thunderstorms develop to our south and southeast, they may be able to rob our moisture and the amounts will be lower.  We’re only carrying a slight chance for rain showers in Aberdeen, Pierre, and Rapid City where the amounts will stay less than a tenth of an inch.  Highs on Saturday will be in the sixties.

As the system leaves on Saturday night, temperatures will NOT cool as much as you might think.  We’re keeping sixties around for Sunday and into early next week.  A cold front Tuesday night might spark light showers, but amounts will stay less than a tenth of an inch.
