Storm Center Update - Sunday PM

December 30, 2012, 5:48 PM by Ben Cathey

Sharply colder air is on the way.  It will move into our area after midnight, accompanied by a cold front and more stratus clouds.  The final day of 2012 looks cold, with most spending the day in the single digits.  We could also see flurries develop in the northern half of South Dakota.  Additional flurries are also possible early tomorrow in NW Iowa.

Mostly it will be a quiet day but many are more curious about the evening.  If you are headed outdoors Monday night into Tuesday morning, expect very cold air.  Though most will remain dry, there could be a fresh dusting if far NE KELOLAND.  Even with the addition of some clouds, lows will dip to below zero in many cases.

Tuesday itself should be just a bit warmer.  As cold high pressure moves east, we’ll pull in a noticeable south breeze. This will last for one day only, though.  By Wednesday a Clipper and twin cold front will arrive from our NW.  Moisture is still lacking, but we’re going to add a slight chance of light snow in for Aberdeen.  This storm is also just a bit more elevated, so some snow totals could be lost before it reaches the ground.  Still, with the system being slow moving, many in KELOLAND could eventually end up with light snow.  It’s something to watch as we go through the week.

That cold front will make us colder on Thursday and even the extra sunshine behind the front won’t do much to help us.  We do start to warm things back up from Friday through Sunday.  This period will be quiet with abundant sunshine.  We’ll have to watch the long-range forecast, though, as some light moisture could be moving in by the middle of January.
