Storm Center Update - Sunday PM

December 9, 2012, 7:08 PM by Ben Cathey

Blizzard conditions are moving closer to the eastern edges of KELOLAND.  Still, interstates I-29 and I-90 remained partially closed.  I-90 is shut down from Sioux Falls to Chamberlain.  I-29 is shuttered from Sioux Falls to Sisseton.
Much of what appeared to be fresh snow today was actually drifting snow that was lofted by strong winds.  Gusts easily hit 40 mph for much of the day.  Driving was often hazardous and could continue to be so for much of the coming week.  The Arctic blast of cold air means that it will take a while for snow to melt.
We will see some of this year’s coldest weather tonight, as many bottom out below zero.
The good news is that wind will SLOWLY decrease after midnight.

Tomorrow another disturbance will push through KELOLAND.  Most computer models don’t add much accumulation tomorrow.  Still, we could see some additional flurries across western South Dakota earlier in the day.  Flurries are possible East River later on tomorrow.  A system will move through North Dakota on Wednesday but most of the activity will stay north of our border.  Cold air continues to be a dominant story throughout the end of next week, and we’ll have grey skies, as well.
We’re still keeping an eye out for an evolving system for Iowa next weekend.

Stay warm and drive safe!
