There’s plenty of sunshine in store today, and temperatures will finally cooperate, as well. Of course, this only lasts one day, so now’s the time to get outside before the weather turns surly. Winds are starting out of the south today, as we warm up through early afternoon. Before dusk, another powerful cold front moves in. That will cool us down before the evening even begins.
Light patches of snow are possible tonight in the NW Black Hills, but this isn’t looking too likely. Winds strengthen from the NW, becoming quite windy in the west overnight. Snow IS likely tomorrow in the SW corner of SD but there are no Advisories, Watches or Warnings posted at this point. This should move in from Montana late tonight but especially into tomorrow morning. Due to the timing, most of the early action will be snow. We’ll have very little warming out west, and the overall moisture trend is on the way up. Some spots could pick up a half inch of total moisture after everything melts off. Despite the chill in the air, some of this should fall as a wintry mix. Freezing rain is also likely in some spots, based on a few of our tools. There’s a thin layer of just-warm-enough air but the roads will be cold. Hence the chance of freezing rain, which could take away from some snowfall totals.
This all moves east late Monday and into early Tuesday. A snowy mix is set to move into Pierre in this time frame but much of it will come overnight. This reaches Sioux Falls and Aberdeen by Tuesday morning. Sioux Falls still looks like primarily very cold rain while that mix will head towards the NE corner of SD. This breaks apart late Tuesday but another system arrives on its heels early Wednesday. This larger, more complex system tracks mainly SE of the area but its northern edge should bring a decent shot of rain to many. Cold winds wrapping around that low will bring a cool-down and chance of snow to those in central SD by late Wednesday. This mostly clears the area by late Thursday, which is also Halloween. Still, you might want to prepare for rain for day-of Trick or Treating.
