Freezing rain continues to head north into portions of KELOLAND. From Pine Ridge eastwards, many are seeing some morning moisture. Sioux Falls and Yankton have been just above freezing for most of the morning, but roads and sidewalks are already slick in Yankton. The Freezing Rain Advisory is still in place and includes Sioux Falls. We are still keeping the forecast of a tenth of an inch of ice to close to three tenths of an inch. Even with these seemingly lighter amounts, untreated spots will become very slick and icy.
This system will continue to push NNE through the morning before taking an east track through the afternoon. Moisture should linger in SW Minnesota for much of today.
Tonight we will dry things out for most. We could still see flurries in the NE of South Dakota after midnight. Lighter snow is possible on the west side of the Black Hills after dark, as well.
Temperatures will be mild tomorrow but we have yet another snow event on the way. By early afternoon, we’ll start to see snow forming south of Pierre. It has long looked like a band would begin in this area and then progress north, and we’ll keep the forecast the same. The best chance for higher accumulations is from Milbank to Chamberlain, including Huron and Mitchell. Some could end up with 3-6” but I think most will have less. Winds won’t be quite as bad as some of our recent snow events. Still, it is a pretty good looking storm. Sioux Falls looks to see some action late tomorrow but especially into the overnight and early on Tuesday.
An Arctic cold front comes on Tuesday night and we’ll be very cold on Wednesday and Thursday. Almost everyone will drop 15-20 degrees in just one day. The good news is that warmer air will arrive by next weekend!
