Storm Center Update - Sunday AM

January 6, 2013, 8:47 AM by Ben Cathey

We’ll have a fair amount of sunshine on tap for today and less daytime wind.  Expect both a gorgeous sunrise and sunset in KELOLAND.  We’ll start melting some snow over the next few days but it will be a slow process.
This evening will be a little milder but we could see some spotty flurries in central South Dakota.  Watch for near-ground winds to be quite breezy.  This will be an issue on Buffalo Ridge, where just the slightest elevation makes a difference.
Tomorrow will be similar to today in that we’ll be warm by January standards.  Winds will be moderate and there will be sunshine.  Late Monday into Tuesday, another system will track in from our west.  This is most likely to impact the North Dakota-South Dakota border with light snows.
Wednesday will be the warmest day of the week, before big changes come to our region.  But Thursday a large storm over the southern Great Plains will move closer to KELOLAND.  Though it looks like the bulk of the action will be well to our southeast, NW Iowa and SE South Dakota could catch some snow and high winds.  There is a lot of variability in this first system, though, and it is still far out in the forecast.
The next system will arrive from the SW.  This has the better chance of having a widespread impact.  Some computer runs are bringing snow to many in our area.  Winds will also be something to watch out for in between these large-scale systems.  Right now we’re keeping the chances of moisture in place but on the low side.
