Blizzard conditions continue for much of northern South Dakota. First we had the snow. Now we get the brutally cold north winds. As this system slowly pushes east, the winds on the back edge will also move east. Sustained winds have already clocked in at 30+ mph and we’ve had several gusts above 40 mph.
That is bringing poor visibility across our area. Wind chills will be below zero for most of the day and high temperatures were reached early this morning. We will cool down throughout the rest of the day.
Here are some snow totals as of this morning (which will increase as new reports come in):
Sioux Falls: 1.5” (at KELO)
Aberdeen: 7.7”
Brookings: 8.7” (very powdery)
Turton: 6”
Red Shirt (Custer County): 2”
Huron: 4.5”’
Many other reports of more than 8” in central South Dakota.
Northern South Dakota, especially north of Highway 14, got the brunt. Again, additional snowfall is expected. Even if snow is done at your house, it will still SEEM like it is snowing because of blowing snow and drifting.
After snow moves east we’ll be very cold tonight. Tomorrow will not be much warmer and it’s going to take a while for the snow to melt. Flurries are possible tomorrow in western South Dakota but we don’t expect much more accumulation West River.
Expect a slight warm-up for Wednesday ahead of the next cold front. Later in the week we will be cold yet again and there will be plenty of cloud-cover. The storm system for next weekend looks to be pushing eastwards. We’ll continue to monitor the latest trends here in the Storm Center.
