Storm Center Update - Saturday PM

February 23, 2013, 5:59 PM by Ben Cathey

It’s been a quiet transition day and many will have a chilly night in store.  We’re already awaiting the onset of the next winter system in KELOLAND but this time it should be more localized.  Rain is just starting in the far northwest, where it is still much too warm for snow.
This rain should move into the Black Hills and SW South Dakota tonight and will eventually change over to snow.  Some of the moisture will be left as rain so snowfall totals might get robbed a bit.
In the east, clear skies and light winds will allow temps to drop quickly after sunset.  We also have another favorable setup for patchy fog in the southeast and in parts of Minnesota and Iowa.
This low pressure system causing the snow will stay well to our south and we’ll only catch the fringes of it after tonight.  The storm takes a path almost due south towards the Oklahoma panhandle and will make an “L” track back to the east from there. With the previous storm, we were much closer to the northern moisture core.  One good thing is that this will continue to alleviate drought to our south, which is needed for our own recovery come spring.
For this reason, much of the snow will be along and south of Interstate 90.  The Hills and foothills should get the best snow totals, between 1 to 4 inches.  Others could be looking at lighter snow but our winds are cutting dry air into the system.  That means we could have lower amounts early on.
The snow line will progress to the east tomorrow before moving south.  By Monday, this should move back towards Sioux Falls.
There are still snow chances in for Tuesday but now we’re looking at Wednesday.  The big system looks to miss us for a direct hit but the back side could bring snow to East River.
