Storm Center Update - Saturday PM

January 19, 2013, 5:34 PM by Ben Cathey

Arctic air is already doing its damage and even more is on the way for the next few days.  We’ve also been tracking very isolated patches of light snow this afternoon.  The big story for most, though, is the strong northwest winds racing through our area.  Sustained winds have been well above 30 mph East River, with gusts near 40.  A Wind Advisory remains in effect until 9:00 p.m. Central.  Some on the NE prairie are already in the single digits after starting the day in the 30s!
Light snow is again a possibility for tonight, but mostly in the far north.  A lot of this will spread eastwards after midnight and the coverage area will increase for much of early Sunday.  This is a higher chance – low amount type event.  Even with winds and cold, most will receive less than one inch of snow.  In the farthest NE counties, two inches are possible, but it will be very difficult to actually measure snow amounts.
There will not be much warming tomorrow.  We’ll flat-line much of the day and it will still be breezy as a high pressure system struggles to move in.
Monday will be the coldest day.  High pressure and clear skies will build in East River and that will mean bitter cold.  Another weak clipper comes in on Tuesday but widespread snow looks unlikely at this time.  Another similar system arrives on Sunday and that could provide a cool-down late in the week.

Stay warm and have a great Sunday!
