Storm Center Update - Saturday PM

January 5, 2013, 5:08 PM by Ben Cathey

The big stories today were early sunshine, a cold front and isolated flurries.  The stories we’ll watch the next few days include an extended warm-up and the extended forecast.

This evening, the wind and clouds will both calm somewhat.  We will again be on the cool side with snow established on the ground.  By Tuesday and Wednesday we will get the chance to melt some of that snow.
Tomorrow looks pretty nice, as well.  We will have sun and less wind.  Both will make your day feel warmer.  There could be a few flurries in central South Dakota favoring the afternoon, but there isn’t really any supporting moisture.
The breeze picks up early this week as a ridge pattern arrives from our west.  Again, Tuesday and Wednesday should be the warmest.  Thursday is where the forecast gets trickier.  Our tools show a large storm coming through the Great Plains Thursday and Friday.  This looks to be well to our south but we will have a noticeable breeze for the latter portions of the week.  The bigger issue is where and when snow will fall.  Right now it looks like our southeast counties have the best overall chance from early Saturday through Sunday.  Another system right behind that looks to move into our western areas and could provide another round of late-week snow.  It’s something we’re tracking here for you in the Storm Center on this cool weekend.
