A Blizzard Warning is still slated to go into effect this evening for much of northeastern KELOLAND. Heavy snow has already fallen in Huron, Aberdeen, Mitchell, Chamberlain and many other areas. Visibility is very poor in much of central KELOLAND. The storm is moving quickly and is still strengthening.
We do expect several more inches of accumulation tonight in northern and far eastern KELOLAND. The next big issue will be strong winds from the north and northwest starting during the overnight. We also have a Winter Weather Advisory, which basically extends north from I-90 throughout KELOLAND.
Snow totals will be highest in a line from Mitchell to Aberdeen but there will be another area of large accumulation in far northern South Dakota. Places like Sisseton and Milbank could see locally heavy amounts. Elsewhere, the Highway 14 corridor could see 2-4” before this is all done.
The forecast undergoes some big changes starting tomorrow evening. Brutally cold air arrives from Canada. Many of us will be below zero, especially in the areas that picked up fresh snow. We’ll still have plenty of clouds due to cold air aloft.
Some computer models want to bring more light snow to western South Dakota on Monday. The amounts should be light if anything materializes.
We will stay cold throughout next week. The closest thing to warm air will be on Monday, with highs still chilly.
In the extended forecast, another system looks on track for next weekend. Sometimes these systems slow down and pull east. We’ll have to watch how this system moves into Iowa but we could be seeing more of Old Man Winter!
