We started the weekend off with a decent warm-up, especially in western KELOLAND. There, temperatures came close to 60 degrees. This will basically be a tease, though, as cold air quickly moves back into our region.
The next system arrives late tonight in the far southwest. Though we won’t be very cold, we could see a light rain/snow mix in the southern Black Hills after midnight. Most of the action will be tomorrow and then another round comes tomorrow night into Monday morning. Most of the storm will stay confined to the Black Hills and also the foothills and plains southeast of Rapid City.
Two things could hinder snow totals. The first is the temperature. We won’t be terribly cold during most of this event so rain could sap some snow amounts. The second reason is the dry air creeping in from northern South Dakota.
Either way, the best snow totals will be on the west-facing slopes of the Black Hills. Areas like Custer, Lead and Deadwood could see more than five inches. Otherwise, if you are on the plains, expect more like 1-3 inches. Pierre will be right on the borderline for getting light snow. This system will move into Nebraska Monday so it is possible that areas like Sioux City could get snow while Sioux Falls remains dry.
Aberdeen will also be dramatically colder on Monday morning as a piece of cold air heads for NE KELOLAND.
Later in the week we expect a pattern favoring more sunshine with warmth.
