Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

December 21, 2013, 10:06 AM by Jay Trobec

Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

Maybe it will start to turn cold, since today is the official first day of winter?.

Actually, today will be a warmer day in many places, with partly cloudy skies and teens for highs in Eastern KELOLAND. Rapid City will see the 20s.

But the relative warmth comes to a loud and screeching halt tonight. Strong north winds will drive cold air toward us out of Canada. Wind chills will be significant, because the air temperatures will again be near or below zero. Light snow is also possible, but accumulation will be minimal.

Then tomorrow the arctic air will be in control. Highs will be in the single digits over much of the area. Some places may struggle to get above zero for daytime highs, and the northerly winds will continue to blow, extending the wind chill threat.

Monday looks to be the coldest day of all, starting with a morning in the teens and 20s below zero. Aberdeen could bottom out near 25 below zero. While the winds will be lighter, the high temperatures will be only a few degrees above zero in the east. Northeastern South Dakota will probably not get above the zero mark.

Then a bit of improvement for Tuesday, Christmas Eve. We will carry a chance of light snow in the forecast, but highs should be in the low 20s East River and low 30s West River.

Christmas Day should be relatively quiet, with low 20s east and low 30s in Rapid City. Another shot of cool air will drop our temps again on Thursday.
