Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

January 26, 2013, 7:52 AM by Ben Cathey

We’re in for a pretty mild day for most.  Highs will once again be above average in the west, with some topping out near 50!  We’ll have variable cloud-cover, with thicker clouds in the north and northeast.  Even though Rapid City will be warm, Aberdeen will again struggle to get out of the deep freeze.  Other than that, it should be quiet until this evening.
A warm front will push past Sioux Falls ahead of the next system for tomorrow.  We could see a few flurries from Watertown, Huron, Aberdeen and Brookings.  There really is very little moisture so we don/t expect much.
We have a Freezing Rain Advisory for Northwest Iowa and far southeast South Dakota.  This system will come in during the morning tomorrow via Nebraska and the temperature profiles are just the right mix for freezing rain.  Sioux Falls is not included in this but could still see wintry mess for a time.  There is not much moisture in play, only a fraction of an inch.  Still, any amount of ice that sticks to roadways makes for treacherous driving conditions.  If you are heading to Des Moines or Omaha you are more likely to run into these issues.
Another system will come quickly after.  We have a slight chance of rain/snow mix on Monday for central South Dakota.  This will move eastwards late in the day and could impact Sioux Falls.  A larger system comes in on Tuesday but computer models now make it less of a compact low and also bring it farther east.
By Wednesday, an Arctic blast comes back to our area.  The jet stream will head far south and that means the cold should stick around until further notice!
