Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

January 12, 2013, 7:43 AM by Ben Cathey

Even as snow continues to fall across KELOLAND, we’re tracking brutally cold wind chills.  Snow will continue to fall in many areas through early this evening, and fresh accumulation looks likely.  Winds remain strong this morning, with Rapid City checking in with 36 mph winds this morning.  That not only reduces visibility but leads to feels-like temperatures well below zero.  A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for much of the day.
Many of us will have little warming today.  Don’t expect the wind chills to break past zero today, as the breeze remains steady until after dark.  If you are planning on traveling today, look up road conditions, as visibilities in many areas are down to less than a mile.
Tonight very cold air will be the biggest story.  Flurries or light snow will fade in our eastern counties and winds will also slacken.  Buffalo Ridge in SW Minnesota will still keep a breeze, but others will be down to 10-15 mph.
We will get just a bit of warming West River tomorrow but the wind chills will still feel brutally cold at times.  We will have partly cloudy skies later in the day, but it looks like it will take a while to get there, since we have cold air aloft.
We finally start to warm back up on Tuesday and Wednesday.  Computer models are trying to bring a weak storm system to our northwest around this time but we are keeping the forecast dry for now.  Still, the south winds ahead of this storm will cause us to warm up a decent amount.  We will get to melt some of the snow, but with cold air returning late week, we probably won’t get it all.
