Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

January 5, 2013, 7:56 AM by Ben Cathey

We’re starting out a mostly dry weekend with mainly clear skies.  A cold front is sweeping through our northwest and will head eastwards throughout the day.  There will be plenty of wind and breeze today, making it feel chillier than our decent day.  Rapid City will be mild today, as downslope winds add a warmer feel.
This evening will again be on the cold side but then a warm ridge pattern builds into KELOLAND for the next few days.  By tomorrow many will actually get the chance to melt some snow, especially on road skirts and sidewalks.  The sun will come back out and most will be warmer (but Sioux Falls looks about the same tomorrow).  Also, the breeze won’t be very strong, which will make it feel warmer.  Still, a few flurries are possible tomorrow West River late in the day and into the evening.
Most of the week looks pretty quiet.  We could hit 50 degrees in Rapid City by Wednesday but most shouldn’t expect to get quite that warm.  Once we get past Wednesday the forecast becomes more challenging.  It definitely seems like we will be colder but we’re hammering out where winter storms will be from Friday through Sunday.  It looks like a big system will move to our southeast but could still have impacts locally for many.  Another smaller system will move through North Dakota, so most will have a chance to see additional moisture.  It’s a weather story to watch for in the next few days.
