Storm Center Update - Saturday AM

December 15, 2012, 7:44 AM by Ben Cathey

We’re watching a messy winter storm develop in KELOLAND this morning.  South of Brookings, most of this has been rain.  But once you start heading farther north and west, freezing rain is getting bad.  Roads like 281 and 14 are both very slick and viewers have reported plenty of ice.
There is also a Winter Weather Advisory for many.  This entails freezing rain transitioning over to light snow.  We just got an Ice Storm Warning for Lincoln and Lyon Counties in Minnesota.  In the Marshall area, a quarter inch of ice is possible.  At that level, roads become very hazardous and the ice also weighs down trees and power lines.
Sioux Falls and Spencer, IA have picked up very healthy rains, as some spots already close in on half an inch.
Late this morning north winds will move in behind the storm.  These colder temperatures should change the rains over to light snow.  Some in the NE could see a couple of inches but most will be light.
There will be a quick shift east this evening as the storm pushes into Minnesota.  If you have travel planned to Redwood Falls or St. Cloud, check the roads.  Snow should be heavier in central Minnesota.
Not to forget the west today: Rapid City will get some sunshine and a breeze.  Pierre has a slim chance at getting some light moisture, largely early in the day.
Chilly north winds come in tonight and will cool us off into the teens.  Tomorrow will also be cool.  Many will only top out near 30.  Flurries are possible West River early in the day tomorrow.

Warmer air moves in on Tuesday and we will be back above average for highs.  A southern stream storm comes on Wednesday and Thursday.  It will have a tough time pushing far to the north but many in southern KELOLAND could see fresh snow by midweek.  By Friday, very cold air arrives.
