Storm Center Update - Monday PM

December 31, 2012, 4:22 PM by Ben Cathey

A warm front is sitting right over central South Dakota at this hour.  There is a band of clouds along with it, and a sharp contrast in late-afternoon temperatures.  This will help keep us from the deep-freeze late tonight.  But if you are heading out late for New Years celebrations, you will want to pack heavy clothing.  Lows will be down near zero, even with extra clouds above.  A few flurries are not out of the question in central and northern South Dakota, but are not likely.

Tomorrow should offer just a slight warm-up but many won’t be able to notice the difference.  Late tomorrow, mostly by the evening, a new cold front will move back into NW KELOLAND.  This will bring one of the week’s bigger weather stories.  Light snow is possible on Wednesday and into early Thursday.  There still is not much moisture available, but it is still something to watch for.  Most will only work with fractions of an inch, and though it will be cold enough for snow, it appears that accumulations will be light.

There will be a new cool-down after this all passes on Thursday.  The good news is that we’ll start to clear things out.  We will actually have plenty of sunshine through next Sunday.  Some in western South Dakota will even be in the 40s, which is difficult to imagine after this cold streak.  We are still watching outside chances at fresh moisture past the extended forecast, closer to the middle of January.
