Storm Center Update - Friday AM

February 18, 2011, 7:01 AM by Brian Karstens

We have a very messy weekend forecast as the next storm of the winter takes aim at KELOLAND.

First, a winter storm watch goes into effect Saturday night and Sunday for much of eastern KELOLAND including Pierre, Aberdeen, Watertown, Marshall, Yankton and Sioux Falls. The Yankton and Sioux Falls area will be prone to ice with up to a ¼" possible. Farther north, mainly north of Highway 14, snow will be the biggest problem with more than six inches likely. Rapid City and the Black Hills will also see accumulating snow, but no watches are in effect at this time. Again, the majority of the precipitation is forecast Saturday night through the day on Sunday, wrapping up from west to east Sunday night and early Monday morning.

The low pressure center is forecast to track from the panhandle of Nebraska Saturday night, reaching northern Iowa Sunday afternoon. Our southeastern counties south of Sioux Falls may receive areas of heavy rain as well from this storm, perhaps up to 1". This storm will bear watching closely today and through the weekend.

Otherwise, temperatures will be near normal today in southern KELOLAND in the 30s with upper teens in the far north and 40s near Rapid City. Tomorrow will be mild in southern KELOLAND in the 40s, but readings will stay much colder in Aberdeen and there could be some freezing drizzle in the late morning and afternoon for northern and central KELOLAND.

Stay tuned for the latest forecast through the day as this winter storm develops.
