Storm Center Update - 4:30 PM.

March 9, 2013, 4:35 PM by Ben Cathey

Banding snow and wintry mix continues to push through our central and eastern counties late this afternoon.
From Winner and Gregory up to Huron, many spots have seen 3-6” thus far, in line with our snowfall projections.  This came from an intense band at fairly low levels.  That caused snow rates to really pick up, which can be common in these March storms.
Sioux Falls had a record-setting morning, with well over a half inch of rainfall.  This caused some issues with standing water.
Strong north winds are pushing in West River.  With sustained winds near 40 mph, we’ve had reports of gusts above 60 mph.  Even though the city remained fairly dry, there is plenty of wind to go along with early fog.  Now the dew points in the Hills are much lower and that means calmer weather will move in.
Sioux Falls and NW Iowa are just awaiting a wind from the north to pick up.  When that happens, we’ll be ready for snow.  Temperatures in the east have already started to cool.  We’ve still got the Winter Storm Warning across the Nebraska border and the Winter Weather Advisory close to Sioux Falls (Lincoln County, SD).  An enhanced band of snow will likely move into far northeast Nebraska and parts of Iowa and could clip a few South Dakota counties.  We aren’t really going to change our snowfall map, even though some of that band hasn’t arrived yet.
The best window for the metro area to get snow is from 9:00-3:00 tonight.  By this point, the storm will have cleared most of the state.
We’ll start to see clearing skies West River tomorrow.  That will coincide with a spring-like warming trend for Rapid City and Pierre.  If things hold together, we’ll have 60s to enjoy late next week in the far southwest.
There could be a few hiccups: one comes next Wednesday for the far northeast, the other next Saturday in the far west.
